Who is this qualification for?

The Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy is a Technical Certificate qualification aimed at learners who are in a full-time Level 2 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed beauty therapist.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but in order to optimise their chances of success, a learner will ideally hold a Level 1 qualification or equivalent in beauty therapy.

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

– Health safety and hygiene
– Consultation techniques and client care
– Manicure treatments
– Pedicure treatments
– Waxing services
– Facial treatments
– Skin type analysis
– Eyebrow shaping services
– Eyelash and eyebrow tinting services
– Make-up applications
– Anatomy and physiology for beauty therapists

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients whilst providing a range of beauty treatments including facial treatments, skin analysis, manicure, pedicure, waxing, eyelash/eyebrow treatments and make-up applications. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team working and research skills will also be developed.

Why is this qualification the most suitable?

This qualification is one of two VTCT Technical Certificate qualifications in beauty therapy. In addition to this qualification there is the Level 2 Extended Diploma in Beauty Therapy; both qualify learners to become beauty therapists.

At 451 Total Qualification Time (TQT), the Diploma is most suitable for learners who continue, as part of their programme of study to work towards achieving Level 2 English and maths, or those undertaking another qualification in parallel.

The Extended Diploma at 554 TQT is far larger and most suited to learners who have achieved English and maths at Level 2 and wish to focus the majority of their programme on beauty therapies, whereby they will develop a broader range of technical skills. Learners may wish to progress from the Diploma to the Extended Diploma.

What could this qualification lead to?

This is one of three VTCT qualifications in beauty therapy at Level 2. Whilst all qualifications will qualify you to become a junior beauty therapist, this qualification allows you to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients. In contrast, the VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General requires you to work in a commercial salon whereby assessments must be carried out on real paying clients in line with commercial service times. When compared with the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Specialist Techniques which has a minimum of 456 GLH, The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies is smaller (at 345 GLH) and is more suited to delivery in a College of Further Education (CFE) as the substantial vocational component of a Study Programme. Holders of this qualification are eligible to gain the professional membership and insurance cover recommended for entry to employment as a junior beauty therapist.

This qualification is regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual).

This qualification has been approved by the Department for Education for teaching to 16-19 year olds from September 2017, and will be first reported in the technical certificate category of the 2019 16-19 performance tables (subject to confirmation).

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior beautician/beauty specialist including: applying make-up, instruction on make-up, the art of photographic make-up, client care and health and safety.

Learners will further develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: the application of tanning techniques, removing hair using alternatives to wax such as threading or sugaring, eyelash perming, ear piercing or the creative skill of nail art, salon reception duties and displaying and promoting retail products – the full list of optional units is presented in the learners Record of Assessment book (ROA) (specification). This structure of this qualification provides learners with the flexibility to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a junior beautician/ make-up artist.

At 380 guided learning hours (GLH), the Diploma is most suitable for learners who continue, as part of their programme of study to work towards achieving Level 2 English and maths, or those undertaking another qualification in parallel.

The Extended Diploma at 470 to 570 GLH is larger and most suited to learners who have achieved English and maths at Level 2 and wish to focus the majority of their programme on beauty therapies, whereby they will develop a broader range of technical skills. Overview

The VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy is a substantial vocational qualification that will confirm your competence as a beauty therapist. This qualification forms part of an apprenticeship framework, however is also offered outside apprenticeships by education and training providers who can offer this course in a real salon environment and provide you with the opportunity to learn beauty therapy skills, whilst working on real clients. It is important for you to have the opportunity to learn in a real working environment, particularly because this qualification leads to employment in such a client-centred and service orientated sector.

This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years or over and will support you to gain employment as a beauty therapist, as the units contained in this qualification cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role. Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 2 qualification in beauty therapy and/or a successful skills test and interview.

This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist including, mandatory units covering the following: facial and body electrical, body massage, electrical epilation, monitoring procedures in the salon and contributing to the planning of a promotional event.

You will also have the opportunity to further develop your understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: airbrush make-up services, intimate waxing, single eyelash extensions, UV tanning, self-tanning, massage with pre-blended oils, Indian head massage and stone therapy. The structure of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for a career as a beauty therapist.

Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and client care. You will also develop a range of technical skills in preparing the skin, and applying beauty therapy products and electrical equipment to the skin, using a variety of different techniques. Purpose

The VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Beauty Therapy Studies (Massage) is a technical level qualification that provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a massage therapist either as an employee or in a self-employed capacity. This qualification is based on Habia National Occupational Standards (NOS). This qualification is recognised by the UK’s largest beauty and complementary therapy trade body/professional association i.e. The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) and also the UK’s second largest association representing beauty and complementary therapy employers; the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a massage therapist.

This qualification has specifically been designed for the 16-19 age group and builds on existing knowledge and understanding of beauty therapy gained at Level 2, enabling learners to expand the scope of their technical skills to prepare learners for employment in beauty salons, spas and other businesses or as a self-employed massage therapist.

The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a massage therapist including health and safety, client care and communication and body massage incorporating anatomy and physiology and client consultation skills. These units are all mandatory.

Learners also have the opportunity to undertake optional units to enhance their range of practical skills such as stone therapy, Indian head massage and massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils. Learners can also choose to undertake units in the theories and principles of massage or contributing to the effective running of a business. This qualification is comprised of three mandatory units and in order to be awarded the qualification, learners must also gain a minimum of 19 credits from units in the optional group.

The VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Beauty Therapy is a vocationally related qualification that will prepare you to gain employment as an advanced senior beauty therapist, as the units contained in this qualification cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role. Entry on to this qualification can be via previous attainment of a beauty therapy qualification at level 3.

This is a vocational qualification which builds on beauty therapy skills to allow you to develop an enhanced repertoire of advanced specialist beauty therapy techniques to prepare you for employment as an advanced senior beauty therapist. The advanced techniques covered in the mandatory section of this qualification include: laser and light treatments for hair removal, laser and light treatments for skin rejuvenation, microdermabrasion techniques. You will also gain knowledge and understanding of dermatology and microbiology, physiology of ageing, management of health, safety and security in the salon, quality management of client care and salon management. You will also have the opportunity to further develop your knowledge and skills by selecting from a range of optional units, including: research, IT and data handling, marketing, cultural social and technological influences on beauty-related industries, public relations in the hair and beauty sector.

This qualification will qualify you to gain employment as an advanced senior beauty therapist. This is the only VTCT qualification in advanced beauty therapy.

The VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments is an advanced qualification that has been specifically designed for beauty therapists.

This qualification is based on beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS). This qualification is approved and supported by the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA), the standard setting body for hair, beauty, nails and spa qualifications.

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 3 qualification in a relevant discipline prior to undertaking this qualification. Your centre will have ensured that you have the required knowledge, understanding and skills to enrol and successfully achieve this qualification.

Why is this qualification most suitable?


This qualification is the only Level 4 qualification offered by VTCT in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments. The VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments is a vocationally related qualification and is focused on reducing hair growth and photo rejuvenation of the skin using intense pulse light and laser treatments. This qualification requires you to develop skills to carry out IPL and laser treatments. This qualification allows you to gather evidence in a realistic working environment or real working environment without the need for fee paying clients.

What does this qualification cover?


This qualification has been specifically designed for the 18+ age groups, builds on existing knowledge and understanding of therapy skills and will develop an enhanced repertoire of technical skills to prepare you for employment. You will have your skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.

This qualification will require research; it includes the skills involved in providing a thorough consultation with the client to formulate a specific course of treatment, tailored to suit individual client needs, use laser an light treatments for skin rejuvenation and hair removal and to manage the health, safety and security of the salon. What could this qualification lead to?


When you have successfully completed this qualification you will be in a position to aspire to promotion as an advanced beauty therapist providing laser and IPL services within a beauty salon.
