The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Cosmetic Make-up is to prepare you to enter the specific sector of beauty therapy as a junior make-up consultant. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific job role of a junior make-up consultant.

Overview

The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Cosmetic Make-up is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a junior make-up consultant. This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years or over and will support you to gain employment as a junior make-up consultant, as the units contained in this qualification cover all the skills and knowledge required for this role. Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in beauty therapy and/or a successful skills test and interview.

This is a vocational qualification which includes all the elements to work effectively as a junior make-up consultant including mandatory units covering the following: applying make-up, instruction on make-up application and how to provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments.

To further enhance your practical skills you will have the opportunity to choose from the following practical units: provide eyelash perming and, how to display retail stock to promote sales in the salon.

You will also develop a sound knowledge of health and safety practice in a salon environment, and learn how to promote client care and communication in beauty related industries. The structure of this qualification provides you with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for a career as a junior make-up consultant.

Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the skin, health and safety, client care and cosmetic products. You will also develop a range of technical skills enabling you to prepare the skin and apply a variety of make-up products using different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.

What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a junior make-up consultant. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a junior make-up consultant. Career opportunities as a junior make-up consultant exist in a variety of contexts, including:

– Working in a retail concession in a department store
– Working independently/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings

This is the only VTCT qualification which will qualify you as a junior make-up consultant.

Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a junior cosmetic make-up consultant, you may choose to develop your skills further by undertaking qualifications in beauty therapy and related specialist areas, these include:

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy Make-up is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed beauty therapist specialising in make-up. This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) for make-up and is recognised by the UK’s leading professional bodies, The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a beauty therapist specialising in make-up.

Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 1 qualification in beauty therapy and/or a successful skills test and interview.

Why is this qualification most suitable?


This is one of two VTCT qualifications covering beauty therapy make-up at Level 2. Whilst both qualifications qualify learners to become beauty specialists and gain employment at a junior level, this qualification requires learners to work in a commercial beauty salon, whereby assessments must be carried out on real paying clients in line with commercial service times. In contrast, the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up also contains some hairdressing units and can be achieved through gathering evidence in a college’s realistic working environment without the necessity for real paying clients.

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General is for learners seeking to gain beauty and make-up skills (not hairdressing) and for those who wish to work in and develop their skills in a commercial setting. This qualification can only be delivered by colleges that have or have access to a ‘real’ salon and not a realistic working environment.

What does this qualification cover?


This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age groups, and will develop the knowledge skills to prepare learners for employment as a beauty therapist specialising in make-up. Learners will have their beauty therapy make-up skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior beauty therapist specialising in make-up including: facial skincare, enhancement of eyebrows and eyelashes, make-up services, instructing on skincare and make-up application, effectiveness at work, health and safety and promoting additional products and services to clients.

Learners will further develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: ear piercing, spa operations, threading, skin camouflage, salon reception duties – the full list of optional units is presented in the learners Record of Assessment book (ROA) (specification). This structure of this qualification provides learners with the flexibility to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a junior beauty therapist specialising in make-up.
